The short answer
For most international routes in 2026, the sweet spot sits 2 to 5 months before departure. Book Europe summer travel by late February; book winter-holiday travel by early September. Inside 21 days, fares climb steeply on nearly every long-haul route we ticket.
Why the old rules changed
Airlines now adjust fares continuously with demand-prediction systems, so the mythical 'cheapest day to buy' has largely vanished. What still matters enormously is the day you fly: midweek departures on international routes average 12–18% below Friday and Sunday departures in our booking data.
Region by region
Europe rewards early booking for June–August and patience for November–March. Asia via the Gulf carriers is most competitive 3–4 months out. Latin America is the most last-minute-friendly region we sell, with genuine deals inside 6 weeks on many routes.
The agent advantage
Published fares are only part of the market. Consolidator contracts — wholesale fares distributed through agencies — often don't follow the public fare's price curve at all. When a public fare spikes, the wholesale one may not have moved. That's when a five-minute phone call saves four figures.
